Grit Capital is a capital market advisory firm based in Toronto with a focus on telling the right story to the right people. Through targeted roadshows, one-on-one meetings with investors, events, conferences, traditional media, and social media Grit Capital understands the importance of thinking outside of the box when it comes to investing. This vibrant company also features a weekly newsletter that goes out to 2,000+ curated finance professionals, a following of 15,000+ across social media and immersive conference series.
Grit Capital’s focus is on high growth millennial sectors such as cannabis, crypto/blockchain, and e-gaming — along with helping wealth managers and institutional portfolio managers understand them. But, where did the inspiration for this company come from? CEO, Genevieve Roch-Decter explains that her friendship with partner Nicole Marchand, as well as a background in portfolio management, institutional sales, and investment banking led the two to launch a company that would go against the grain when it comes to traditional investor relations firms. Genevieve notes that the current investor relations model is archaic — things are done the same old way, and this approach needs a more millennial flare.
“We consider ourselves ‘investor relations on steroids!’ Meaning we combine the old school ‘foot soldiering’ of in person roadshow marketing companies with the power of marketing to our clients 24/7 on social media, such as Instagram and LinkedIn. We find that investors look at their phones first thing in the morning and before going to bed, so we can really dominate and own their eyes and ears,” says Roch-Decter. Grit Capital has also hosted a series of conferences that are all about having a good time and stepping away from the standard boardroom setting in order to bring companies to life.
A Millennial Focus
Not only is it crucial for younger people to be financially literate in order to empower themselves, but the global investing realm will soon be relying on these very individuals. To align with this, Grit provides resources that illuminate some of the investment realm’s emerging industries, such as cannabis, blockchain, and e-gaming.
Increased financial literacy and awareness amongst millennials is a crucial mandate necessary for the continued success of future generations. Not to invoke morbid imagery, but over the next 15–30 years, there is expected to be a massive transfer of intergenerational wealth, from inheritances, and money moving into the hands of younger folks, as Genevieve mentions. In order to optimize this influx of capital for younger people, a solid base understanding of how money is to be well-managed, and how investing can help an individual make better use of their capital, should be something everyone is focused on.
Emerging “fringe” industries, such as blockchain and cannabis, offer exciting and potentially relatable realms for younger investors to get their feet wet. Many of these quickly evolving sectors are based on segments that younger people may understand well, and even interact with on a regular basis, like cannabis, cryptocurrencies, and e-gaming. So, while these sectors are still working to garner validity among more conservative investors and institutions, they offer a unique gateway into the world of personal finance for younger people.
A Series of Events
Since Grit’s launch in 2016, the company has spearheaded numerous high-profile and innovative conferences and tours. Notable past events include the 2017 “Grit Capital Banking on Blockchain” tour across Canada (Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver), which showcased some of the biggest and brightest minds in blockchain, including 1,500+ investors (featured in the Globe & Mail). Another was Polycon 2018: The World’s First Securities Token Conference, which featured over 40 companies, 90 speakers & 600 attendees in the Bahamas.
Building off of the success of these events, Grit Capital will be hosting the Vegas Cannabis Tour at the end of October, where Genevieve and Nicole plan to visit two dispensaries and one packaging facility, as well as an immersive cannabis museum, and invite investors and portfolio managers to join.
With an innovative and fresh approach to investor relations, and a maturing target audience, Genevieve Roch-Decter and Nicole Marchand have carved out a niche in the investing space that has been lacking for quite some time. Their take on providing immersive and fun conferences has propelled their growth, as well as their reputation for providing clients with not only an established capital markets advisory firm, but one that also knows how to tell the right story to the right people.
